A Weekend In My Back Yard

Well not exactly, but recently I visited three favorite spots: Pitt Polder, Stewart Farmhouse, and Crescent Beach. I've been experimenting with long exposures and in-camera Orton effects, which are always surprising and exciting - how much fun is that?

So Many Pictures, So Little Time

Nearly two months have passed since my last post - where does the time go? Here are some shots from a recent trip to the museum at Britannia Mine, near Squamish. This is a thought provoking destination for anyone interested in mining's impact on the environment. During our underground tour (thanks, Lara!) we learned much about Britannia's eventful and tragic history. Read the story here.

The Great Divide

In early winter I traveled to Kimberley, in south eastern British Columbia. Our Province offers such amazing variety, and this area is no exception. The massive Rocky Mountains loom on the horizon, while Kimberley entertains with its vibrant Bavarian community. Just up the road is the tiny town of Skookumchuck. Who could resist a place with a name like that?

Westminster Abbey

More experiments, this time at Westminster Abbey, home of Mission's Benedictine Monks. Although not far from an urban center, this serene property exists in a world of its own. Even in winter, the pastoral landscape has a warm glow, and the interior of the cathedral soars with transcendent grace.

What's An HP315?

This is a burning question! The Hewlett Packard 315 was my first digital camera, circa 2002. It had 2 whopping megapixels, and an image resolution of 1600 x 1200 - prehistoric by today's standards. This is the camera that introduced me to photography, and as such it deserves recognition. There is a certain charm in the delicate colors of these tiny files. Most of the pictures were taken during various trips to the United States. I'm noticing a distinct water theme here - clearly those seeds were sown a long time ago.

Saturday at the Temple

Feeling all inspired by the Freeman Patterson workshops, I visited the Buddhist Temple in Richmond. This place is steeped in tradition and spirituality; the opulence is as overwhelming as the incense scented air. I tried some multiple exposures - first with controlled zooming, followed by an Orton technique. Then it started to rain. Oh well, it's winter on the Wet Coast!

Imagination Is Eternity

I'm a member of the Langley Camera Club, and this week we hosted Freeman Patterson, Canada's premier photographer. What an experience it was. I was fortunate enough to attend his Master Class, where these images were made. Then it was on to an all day seminar, where Freeman shared his matchless gifts. I feel like I've been given a treasure box, and now must find the opportunity and the courage to open it.

Changing Seasons

It's amazing how quickly the view can change. Sometimes in hours, sometimes in meters. An example was last weekend's touchdown in the Mount Baker area. The first two images were taken at Silver Lake, a popular summer destination. The third photo shows a Glen road about eighteen hours later. The snow forced me to abandon the afternoon shoot by the lake, but it was worth it for next morning's glory.

Two more views of the beauteous Nooksack river, plus a dazzling fountain that twinkled and glowed and called out my name in the darkness.

Stewart Farmhouse

OK, this is not really the farmhouse; it's the water that surrounds the property. One of these days I might stop ogling the ocean long enough to capture the delightful details of the historic structure. Meanwhile, those sunsets surely do beckon.

Working With Spidey

I wish I had a way to reward this spider. She dangled patiently outside my greenhouse for two whole days, enduring water spray and flashing lights with no complaint at all. Nature is amazing - at first I thought this was a seven legged spider, but now I realize there's a new leg growing on her left hand side. WOW.
