Between Three Rivers

A recent excursion took me into the magnificent Fraser Canyon, home of the Fraser, Thompson, and Nicola rivers. I stayed in historic Spences Bridge, home to hoodoos, an ancient bridge, and a backyard bathtub. These delights were accompanied by the rumble of trains on pioneers' pathways. Oh, and the autumn leaves were amazing too!

Summer's Last Hurrah

The summer of 2014 has been one of the best ever; week after week of sunny weather, perfect for exploring near and far. In August I took advantage of this bounty and visited Parksville, on Vancouver Island. We stayed by the ocean, near Rathtrevor Provincial Park, and spent some time on the ancient, water-worn banks of the Englishman River. Spectacular!

Two For The Road

I recently visited a car museum of sorts - a collection of vintage rides left to weather in a farmer's field. All had seen better days and were in various stages of disrepair, but that was the attraction. My time there was far too brief, and I barely scratched the surface of this fascinating place. A return engagement is definitely on the radar!

I've been to North Vancouver's Lonsdale Quay a few times, but never with the goal of taking pictures. What treasures were revealed when I started looking through photographer's eyes! Of course, it helped that the evening light was gentle and glowing, and that I was by the water. A fountain gave up the most surprising images; not the shooting spray but rather the swirling eddies beneath. Take a look....

Workshop Till You Drop

Last weekend I had the pleasure of participating in a photo shoot led by talented local photographer Graham Osborne. Graham certainly put us through our paces. Three From Kapalua Bay

We visited this gorgeous spot a couple of times. Maui weather is capricious during the winter months, so we experienced glorious sunshine and torrential tropical storms, sometimes in the same afternoon. Here are a few shots of Kapalua Bay in both conditions.

Haleakala was the highlight of my visit to Maui. It's an otherworldly place, full of mist and mystery. The air was thin, the climb was steep, and the views were spectacular. Due to heavy fog at the summit I was unable to capture the vistas seen by others, but the scenery just a few feet down was amazing.

A Dog Has Her Day

Once there was a dog named Sara Jane.  She was old, very old - some said she had outlived her usefulness.  Occasionally she thought so too.  She knew she was falling apart, some parts faster than others, but she tried to be brave. 

One day her family brought home a puppy.  The puppy was untrained, loud and very active.  Sara tried to ignore the newcomer, but it wasn't easy.  That puppy was a pest.  She wanted to play all the time, and got all sorts of new toys to play with.   Her favorite game was to chew on Sara, when all Sara wanted to do was sleep.

The puppy was quick.  If there was a pot to lick, she always got there first.  That made Sara sad, but there wasn't much she could do.  One day she noticed a new toy, a nice fresh rawhide.  Rawhides were Sara's favorite. This was a big one, so big that the puppy could gnaw on it for hours and barely make a dent.  Sara wanted that rawhide.  She would finish it in ten minutes.

When the family wasn't looking, Sara picked the rawhide up. She held it in her mouth.  It hung out the side, like a cigar.  She looked funny.  She wanted to take it away and eat it up, but she always thought about it too long.  Her Mom took it away every time.  No, Sara, that belongs to the puppy. It will get stuck in your throat.

Sara tried again.  Over and over she tried, for about a week, but someone always caught her.

Finally, she succeeded!  She took the rawhide into her room and chewed on it happily for about ten minutes.  There wasn't much left after that.  It looked awful, like a long pink tongue sticking out of her mouth, but that didn't matter.  It was delicious! 

Her Dad was looking for the rawhide.  He came into Sara's room and saw the long pink thing hanging from her lips.  Her Dad thought it was her tongue.  He yelled - he thought Sara was finished.  He was wrong. 

Sara felt good.  The rest of the treat went in the garbage, but she could still taste it.

I recently attended a photography seminar hosted by Andre Gallant, who has worked extensively with Freeman Patterson. It shows. I came away completely inspired and regenerated yet again, and couldn't wait to try one of his techniques. Here's the result - it was such fun creating this image.  Thank you, Andre!

Maui - 100 Posts and Counting

Surprise, surprise - I love to travel! Over the past year I've been fortunate enough to fly to two very special, and very different destinations: Scotland and Maui. My trip to Maui happened in January - I left the damp, chilly Lower Mainland and was dropped, overdressed and squinting, into the tropics. We stayed near Lahaina, which is an eclectic mix of the historic, the wild, and the upscale. I tried to capture a bit of each with my camera.
