Today I visited with the Brass Band Art Group; four very talented artists and occasional co-exhibitors. We spent the morning 'drawing', from a simple still life set up by a window. They used paper and artist implements, while I took photos with my macro lens. This was so much fun - like exercises from art school, but with a brand new set of tools.

This weekend was spent at the Glen, so I took some time to photograph baubles in a natural setting. A person could get carried away with this sort of thing!

Maybe you've heard the joke about the difference between 'fishing' and 'catching'? Certainly, a trip to the Vancouver Aquarium suggests plenty of fish to many people. On this, my third visit, I didn't even try to capture those darting creatures. They move WAY too fast! I focused instead on their environment. Yes, I did get the shot of the not-so-tiny toad, but that guy wasn't going anywhere quickly.

The big night has come and gone – I saw Lindsey Buckingham in concert! Here is my first music review – I’ve always wanted to write one, and since this is my blog I get to do just that.

THOSE WHO ARE HERE FOR PHOTOGRAPHY CAN SKIP THIS POST.

This was a sold out show, full of primarily middle aged, enraptured fans. Lindsey did not disappoint, playing a 2 hour set of the old and the new.

I left with mixed feelings. Obviously I had built this concert up so high that no human could possibly fulfill expectations. It was great to finally see this man live, something I’ve looked forward to for fifteen years!

Lindsey’s new work is excellent, leaning heavily on a classically influenced picking style that is elaborate and intense. Each track from his latest album, ‘Seeds We Sow’, is a masterpiece of sparkling instruments and distinctive vocals.

He has already completed several concert dates, and has 21 more before the tour ends in December. Unfortunately, the rigors of the road are taking their toll on my guitar hero.

Early in the set Lindsey was shaking out his hand after each song. He appeared to experience discomfort from the heavy picking, and his forays into that captivating style were limited. His voice was also affected; the nuances of the vocals shadowed by overstretching and overuse.

I would have been thrilled to hear all acoustic material, but this was not to be. Lindsey and his crack band played several Fleetwood Mac songs, and the crowd loved it. These songs were clearly the highlight of their evening, and their reason for attending. It made me wonder, why didn’t these people just buy a Fleetwood Mac ticket?

Lindsey Buckingham is no fool – to fill concert halls he must keep his fans happy. However these ‘fans’ do him no favour if they only want to hear music that peaked nearly 30 years ago. This indicates scant appreciation for his formidable regenerative powers and ongoing artistic growth.

What seems to matter most to Lindsey Buckingham is his ‘Little Machine’ - the creative force that has inspired him to produce three solo albums in five years. He describes ‘Seeds We Sow’ as ‘the best work I’ve ever done’. His words are full of excitement and joy.

It would be wonderful if more of us shared his enthusiasm.

Time for a thrill! On October 22nd I'm seeing Lindsey Buckingham in concert. When I bought tickets from the teenaged clerk, he said, 'And where is she playing?' Kind of a burn and a wake up call together:)

For those who may not know, Lindsey B. is the former lead guitarist/vocalist/songwriter of Fleetwood Mac. I consider him pure genius, as his musical talents are without peer.

Want a little piece of Paradise? Visit Bowen Island, the jewel of Howe Sound, a 20 minute ferry ride from Horseshoe Bay. Yesterday was pure summer: Bowen's lakes, beaches and even the tourist attractions sparkled in the sunlight. As usual, I didn't want to leave.

I had to run for cover, as I have on six previously aborted missions in this spot. But it was different this time - after a short while the sun reappeared, giving me hours of opportunity.

What's An HP315?

This is a burning question! The Hewlett Packard 315 was my first digital camera, circa 2002. It had 2 whopping megapixels, and an image resolution of 1600 x 1200 - prehistoric by today's standards. This is the camera that introduced me to photography, and as such it deserves recognition. There is a certain charm in the delicate colors of these tiny files. Most of the pictures were taken during various trips to the United States. I'm noticing a distinct water theme here - clearly those seeds were sown a long time ago.

Feeling all inspired by the Freeman Patterson workshops, I visited the Buddhist Temple in Richmond. This place is steeped in tradition and spirituality; the opulence is as overwhelming as the incense scented air. I tried some multiple exposures - first with controlled zooming, followed by an Orton technique. Then it started to rain. Oh well, it's winter on the Wet Coast!

I'm a member of the Langley Camera Club, and this week we hosted Freeman Patterson, Canada's premier photographer. What an experience it was. I was fortunate enough to attend his Master Class, where these images were made. Then it was on to an all day seminar, where Freeman shared his matchless gifts. I feel like I've been given a treasure box, and now must find the opportunity and the courage to open it.

It's amazing how quickly the view can change. Sometimes in hours, sometimes in meters. An example was last weekend's touchdown in the Mount Baker area. The first two images were taken at Silver Lake, a popular summer destination. The third photo shows a Glen road about eighteen hours later. The snow forced me to abandon the afternoon shoot by the lake, but it was worth it for next morning's glory.

Today I lost a good friend, Judy Daniels. Judy was a warm, articulate, witty woman with a huge zest for life. She was also a very gifted photographer who taught me many things. We shared a lot of good times, and she will be greatly missed. Judy struggled with cancer for over a year. It finally claimed her.

Fly freely, dear one - your wings are strong. You will never be forgotten.

Dear Artist,

Where I live, the spiders come out in autumn. They're in my face when I bend to turn on the garden hose. Going about their sky-harvest and their devious mating-games, they spread their webs across my larger windows. In the nearby forest there's a surprise of mushrooms. The longer, darker nights bring the owl's call closer. Even by day the night birds are more active, silently moving between the tall cedars.

When painters take their paints to the forest, they feel this presence. While the hiker, jogger and even the photographer can get some of the benefit, the richest spirit is released to the ones who sit in a spot for some time. Fitting in and adapting to the scene, we become part of nature's furnishings. Alone, or with a quiet friend, with simple, timeless tools and procedures, we honour the privilege. Consistently, the surroundings that attracted us in the first place give up more secrets as we sit.

PHOTOGRAPHERS GET JOY TOO

I am a formally trained painter who now makes photographs. During my schooling, my 14 years as a painter, and my transition into photography, I frequently encountered the view that photography is not art, and by association, photographers are not artists. Some think we just point, and shoot, and the camera does it all. Not so.

When out with my camera, the hours melt into minutes. I frequently spend extended periods at a single location, taking picture after picture, moving this way and that, experimenting with setting after setting. This is a whole body experience - sometimes I'm perched on a tree limb, other times I'm on my belly.

Do I feel connected to my subject? Absolutely. Do I slip from the present into the subconscious, intuitive state that brings forth true creativity? Without question. Not surprisingly, I felt this way about painting too. Is my photography art? I believe so. It's certainly every bit as satisfying as brushes and paint.

Learning how your tool works and creating images that otherwise could never exist in reality is a true art. Last night I went to Fort Langley, where the Albion Ferry docked during its 50 year run on the Fraser River. About a month ago the ferry service was replaced by the Golden Ears Bridge, and the boats are now at the Maple Ridge Terminal, awaiting a new home. While the new bridge is necessary, it was sad to see them there. I will treasure the memory of foot passenger crossings with the sun in my face and the wind in my hair.

Every Picture Tells A Story, Don't It?

This one certainly does. I was in Summerland a few years back, when the town was a temporary home for dozens of migrant fruit pickers. Mostly young Quebecois, these people were on every street. French conversation filled the air. They were charming photographic subjects - a delightful mix of the traditional and the bohemian. A true band of gypsies.

This photo has been in my files ever since. Today I figured out how to make it whole.

Out of the Archives, Into the Now

Between October 3 and October 8, 2008, I travelled to the West Kootenays of British Columbia, visiting areas around Nakusp, New Denver, Sandon and Revelstoke. Autumn color was at its peak. It was the glorious, breathtaking moment before Nature sends her first snow. I am still glowing from the experience; the sights, sounds and splendor were almost beyond words.
